Floreat Etona! Jolly Boating Songs!

Well, I think that the tagline for my blog should change again. I have achieved gainful employment. In a surprising act of faith, Eton College have decided to offer me a position as physics master. From September I shall be a 'beak', wearing lovely pinstripe trousers, waistcoat, white tie and tails. I shall be taking charge of 'divs' (those are actually lessons, not the pupils!), 'schools' (so are those) and various games. They are very keen on games.

I am being sucked inexorably into the Establishment. The Establishment is pictured above, in all its black and white glory.

Of course, the best thing about it are the 4 months of holiday and inclusive accommodation. That, and access to their 2 swimming pools, several squash courts, 9-hole golf course and everything else. The pupils are also very eager, which is encouraging for a new teacher.

Old times

Today is the big day: England vs Scotland. It is satisfying to be defending the Calcutta Cup, but I have to say that most people are not at all optimistic about our chances of retaining it. I am not one of these nay-sayers! We shall triumph on Twickenham soil for the first time in 24 years. So much so that the SRU will be given rights to the ground and will be able to use that nice soil to grow potatoes and turnips in time for next year's Burns supper.

I am enjoying psychometric testing. My downfall appears to be mental arithmetic, but I've not met a physicist or mathematician yet who is any good at it. The best mental arithmetician that I know was a management student.
